What to expect
Day one is a solid drive north from Bucharest into the Carpathian foothills, landing you in Brașov by afternoon. You'll walk the old town centre—narrow lanes between tall guild houses, a Black Church that dominates the skyline, and a palpable sense of stepping back a few centuries. It's not overrun with tourists like some heritage towns, which makes it feel more authentic. Your guide will fill in the Ottoman sieges, Saxon traders, and architectural layers as you go. You'll likely visit either Peleș Castle (the grand royal seat) or Răsnov Fortress, depending on what's open—both are striking but very different beasts.
Day two continues south through the valleys, stopping in smaller towns like Bran (home to the castle the Dracula myth latched onto) and back toward Bucharest. The pacing depends on your guide, but expect a fair bit of time in cars given the distances. Weather in the Carpathians can swing—bring layers.
