6 Hours Private Charter from Taipei in Shifen and Jiufen

About this tour

When Lily from our team booked this private charter out of Taipei, we got a straightforward six-hour run to two of northern Taiwan's most visited spots without the tour-guide commentary. Shifen brings you face-to-face with Taiwan's widest waterfall and the quirky ritual of sky lanterns released along the railway tracks — it's busier than you'd expect but genuinely atmospheric. Jiufen swaps waterfalls for winding teahouse-packed streets where you can nurse proper Taiwanese tea while the crowds mill about. It's a solid option if you want flexibility and your own transport, though you're doing the navigation and research yourself.

Highlights

  • Shifen Waterfall's sheer scale hits differently when you're standing there
  • Sky lantern release along the tracks: chaotic, touristy, genuinely memorable
  • Jiufen's narrow alleys crammed with teahouses and snack stalls
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off saves the early-morning transport scramble
  • Driver speaks English, Japanese, or Chinese — no language barrier stress
  • Private charter means you set the pace, not a rigid group schedule
  • Lantern colours vary — choose your luck-bringing shade on the day

What to expect

You'll be picked up from your Taipei hotel and driven out to Shifen, where the main drawcard is the waterfall itself and the somewhat surreal experience of watching (and potentially releasing) sky lanterns on active railway tracks. It's crowded, especially weekends, but the novelty doesn't wear off fast. Walking around the Shifen Old Street is manageable — mostly flat but you'll weave through other visitors. From there, it's back in the car to Jiufen, a hillier, more atmospheric village of interconnected lanes and traditional teahouses. This is where the day slows down; you pick a spot, order tea, watch the town unfold from above. Your driver will get you there and back, but won't narrate the sights or steer you toward specific spots — that's on you to figure out.

Good to know

The good

Private transport beats shepherding a group, especially if your crew has different energy levels or timing preferences. The waterfall and lantern combo is genuinely worth seeing, and Jiufen's teahouses offer proper respite from Taipei's hustle. The driver's language skills are a real plus for non-Mandarin speakers.

The not-so-good

No guided commentary means you'll need to do your homework beforehand — the driver is transport, not storyteller. Shifen gets mobbed, particularly on weekends and public holidays; lantern fees (NT150–200) aren't included, and you're buying on arrival. It's not a relaxed stroll — both spots involve steady walking on uneven terrain, and Jiufen's hills can catch you out. The six-hour window feels snug if you want proper time in either place. Not suitable if you're pregnant, have spinal issues, or have very young kids (infant seats provided, but legalities apply). Dress for all weather; Taipei weather changes fast. Bring comfortable shoes, your passport details for booking, and cash for lanterns and tea.
