About this tour

When Mia from our Global Hobo crew did the Beginner Freediving Course at Freedive Academy Panglao, she discovered what it actually means to dive on a single breath. Over three days, you'll move through pool sessions, classroom theory, and open water work to hit depths around 20 metres safely. The academy runs AIDA, SSI, and Molchanovs certifications — all legit entry points into freediving. Panglao's a laid-back island vibe with decent infrastructure, and you'll be among other curious first-timers keen to learn the discipline behind breath-holding underwater.

Highlights

  • Pool sessions build confidence before touching open water
  • Instructors walk you through pressure effects and breathing mechanics thoroughly
  • Open water dives test everything you've learned in real conditions
  • Certification recognised across international freediving operators
  • Video footage of your dives included — actually useful for spotting technique gaps
  • Relaxation and mental prep woven through, not just physical drills
  • Small group setup means genuine one-on-one feedback from instructors

What to expect

The course unfolds in three blocks: classroom time covers pressure, nitrogen narcosis, and safety protocols — dry but essential stuff. Then the pool work. This is where it clicks. You'll practise breath-hold stretches, relaxation, and buddy procedures in controlled water before any open ocean attempt. Mia found the pacing generous — no rushing through fundamentals.

Open water sessions are the payoff. You'll do multiple dives to depth in a real reef or sandy environment, using everything you've learned. The instructors stay close, watching your technique and body signals. It's calm, methodical stuff — not adrenaline theatre. You'll earn your certification card and get unedited photos and video of your underwater work. Most people come away surprised by how accessible the sport is once you stop holding your breath tensely and start relaxing into it.

Good to know

The good

Freediving is genuinely different from scuba — no heavy kit, just you and the ocean. If you're curious about your own limits or want a more meditative dive experience, this course opens real doors. Instructors here know their stuff across three major agencies, so you're getting quality tuition. It's suitable across fitness levels, and the island location beats learning in a pool back home.

The not-so-good

This isn't for everyone. Not recommended if you're pregnant or have cardiovascular concerns — the breath-hold mechanics and pressure affect your heart. You'll do pool work first, so mild claustrophobia in confined space could be an issue. Bring lunch money (around 250 pesos per day if you order ahead) or pack your own — not included. The course demands real focus and honesty about your own body, which some find tiring. Panglao's accessible and has public transport nearby, which helps.

Practical info

Bring swimwear, a towel, and sun protection. All snorkelling gear is supplied. Three days, small groups. Book lunch in advance to avoid gaps in the day.
