About this tour

When Ngaio from the crew booked this six-day safari, we were after proper Big Five encounters without the corporate polish. You're rolling through Tanzania's best national parks in a private vehicle, camping under canvas or upgrading to glamping depending on your budget and tolerance for roughing it. The parks are genuinely spectacular — acacia-dotted plains, river valleys, the works — and the wildlife shows up. It's Tanzania done with guides who actually know the bush, not a conveyor belt of tourists.

Highlights

  • Private 4x4 means you set the pace, not a convoy schedule
  • Early morning game drives catch predators on the hunt
  • Camping under stars with proper kit included
  • Guides read animal behaviour and track sightings in real time
  • Mix of plains, woodland, and riverine habitat in one trip
  • Glamping option if you want a bed without sacrificing the view
  • All meals and water sorted — no scrounging for food

What to expect

Day one's a transfer into the parks with orientation. Then it's a rhythm: wake early (4:30am-ish), coffee, two-hour morning drive spotting cats, elephants, buffalo, whatever's on the move. Back for a proper breakfast, rest during the heat, then afternoon game drives from around 4pm. Evenings you're either at camp or glamping, eating dinner cooked on-site, swapping stories with your guide and maybe other travellers. Ngaio reckoned the best bits were the unscripted moments — a leopard dragging a kill up a tree, herds moving across open ground, the sheer scale of the place.

The pacing is unhurried, which suits the wildlife. You're not chasing, you're waiting and watching. Weather can be hot and dusty by day, chilly at night — layering matters. The camps are basic-to-comfortable depending on your choice, and the guides read the land like a map, so you're not just driving around hoping.

Good to know

The good

Six days gives you real time in the parks rather than a rushed hit. Private transport means no sharing a vehicle with randoms, and guides tailor stops to what shows up that day. Camping's genuinely fun if you're okay with basic facilities; glamping splits the difference. All the eating and drinking's sorted, so no hunting for meals. Wheelchairs and prams are catered for, and you don't need to be marathon-fit.

The not-so-good

Early starts aren't optional — animals are most active at dawn. Dust and heat can be relentless, and there's no guarantee you'll tick all five Big Five in six days (wildlife doesn't perform on cue). Basic camping means squat toilets and bucket showers; glamping's nicer but pricier. The drive to parks takes time, so actual game-drive hours vary. Peak season (July–October) books solid.

Practical info

Bring sunscreen, hat, binoculars, layers for temperature swings. Accommodation, meals, transport, park fees all included. Private vehicle, so group size is flexible but typically 4–6 people. Book ahead for peak season.
