About this tour
When Em from our team pedalled through Dealu Mare, Romania's oldest wine region, it felt like someone had plucked Tuscany and dropped it into the Carpathian foothills. Over 6–8 hours, we cycled roughly 20 km through vineyards, stopping at a local boutique cellar for tastings paired with cheese and cured meats. The landscape rolls gently—golden hills dotted with small family wineries—and the vibe is relaxed, mixing a solid workout with proper wine education. It's the kind of tour that appeals to people who want to move their legs and taste something real, without the pretence.

What to expect
Em started early, meeting the guide and getting fitted to a proper hybrid or road bike with a helmet. The first stretch climbs gently through working vineyards—nothing brutal, but your quads notice it. The guide explains what you're seeing: which grapes grow where, why this region's limestone soil matters. You stop for photos and a snack-and-water break around the midpoint, then roll into the boutique cellar. This is the heart of it: you taste 3–4 wines with a local winemaker or cellar staff, paired with boards of local cheese and cured meat. It's educational without being stuffy. The return ride is slightly easier, mostly downhill or flat. By hour six, you're back where you started, ready for a long lunch.
The pace suits mixed fitness levels—no one's racing—and the guide reads the group well. Weather matters (rain turns vineyard tracks muddy), and summer heat can be intense on exposed stretches. The drive to Dealu Mare from nearby towns takes 30–45 minutes depending on traffic.
Good to know
This works brilliantly if you want to explore a wine region on foot (well, wheels) without drinking and driving, and the vineyards around Dealu Mare are genuinely picturesque and low-key. The cellar visit feels authentic—small, family-run places, not mass-market. It suits active drinkers and people with decent fitness; the 20 km and climbing are real but not extreme. Kids can join if they're old enough to pedal and an adult bikes alongside (specialist seats available for younger passengers), though they can't taste wine—minimum age for tastings is 18.
This is a proper bike day, not a leisurely cruise—anyone with dodgy knees or cardiovascular issues should skip it. Summer heat and exposed vineyard tracks mean sun protection is essential. Minimum group size is two paying adults; if numbers drop post-booking, the tour may cancel (alternative or refund offered). Muddy conditions after rain can be sketchy. E-bikes aren't available, so if you prefer electric assist, this isn't your tour. Allow 30–45 minutes travel time to/from the starting point.
Bring sunscreen, water bottle (though water's supplied), and padded shorts if you're saddle-sensitive. Standard bikes, helmet, and a support vehicle are included. Wine and snacks are part of the deal. Minimum 2 pax. You'll need your passport details at booking.
