About this tour

When Lily from our team tried Birdlike's hang gliding experience near Lucerne, we found ourselves strapped into a harness at 2,000 metres, drifting silently over the Swiss Alps for up to an hour. It's genuinely different from paragliding — faster, more responsive, with the pilot tweaking your flight moment to moment based on what you want: adrenaline or serenity. You ride a vintage funicular and a rotating cable car (the CabriO, apparently a world first) to reach Mt Stanserhorn, where the view across central Switzerland spreads out below before you launch into the third dimension. The whole outing takes about three hours.

Highlights

  • Ride the funicular and CabriO cable car — retro charm with modern engineering
  • Launch from 2,000m; pilot reads your mood and adjusts the flight intensity
  • Twenty to sixty minutes aloft with zero engine noise, just wind and altitude
  • Panorama across the Alps, lakes, and valleys from the summit platform
  • Responsive handling makes hang gliding feel more interactive than paragliding
  • Helmet and harness supplied; no prior experience needed
  • Pram-friendly: infants and toddlers can stay with non-flying companions

What to expect

You'll meet your pilot at the base station and take the funicular up the mountain — a gentle, scenic ride in wooden carriages. Then the CabriO cable car rotates as it climbs, giving 360-degree views. At the summit, there's time to take in the panorama before your pilot briefs you, clips you in, and you walk to the launch point together. The takeoff is smooth, not a dramatic jump: you're airborne within seconds, climbing on thermals. The flight itself is quiet and surprisingly calm if you ask for it, or punchier if you want that edge. Your pilot handles the glider; you're just along, feeling the landscape shift below. Landing is gentle — you'll touch down near the summit and walk back down. It's brief but intense, and the whole experience (travel, flight, descent) fills three hours.

Good to know

The good

This is genuinely one-on-one flying with a professional who reads the conditions and your nerves in real time. Hang gliding feels more tactile than paragliding; you notice every thermal and turn. The vintage funicular and rotating cable car are quirky and add character. No fitness level or prior experience required. Small kids and infants can stay topside while an adult flies.

The not-so-good

The cable car up costs CHF 20 extra (free with a Swiss Travel Pass). Pregnant travellers and anyone with cardiovascular concerns should sit this out. The flight duration varies (20–60 minutes) depending on wind and thermals — no guarantee of the full hour. Photos and video run another CHF 40. At 2,000m you're exposed to wind and cold; dress warmly. Peak season (summer) will be busy. The experience hinges on weather; flights can be cancelled or rescheduled. All equipment is provided.
