What to expect
You'll get picked up from your hotel in late afternoon and driven out past the city sprawl to vast, quiet dunes. The SUV driver then hammers across the sand — it's bumpy and genuinely thrilling, not a gentle scenic cruise. You'll stop for camel rides (short but they're real animals, so don't expect theme-park smoothness) and have a crack at sand boarding, which works best if you've got any board sport experience but isn't hard to pick up.
By evening you're at the camp — a sprawling setup with dining tents, stages, and a bar. The BBQ dinner is proper: grilled chicken, lamb, salads, bread. Performers do their thing on a stage while you eat — belly dancer, fire juggler, bloke in a spinning skirt (Tanura). It's entertaining without being corny. Sheesha's around if you want it. The whole vibe is relaxed once you're seated, though the crowds can be big and there's a fair bit of sitting around between acts.
Good to know
It's an actual taste of desert life and Emirati culture done properly — not a theme park version. The dune bashing alone is worth the money if you like a bit of speed and impact. Food's generous and drinks unlimited. Pick-up and drop-off saves you logistics. Suits families, groups, couples, solo travellers — genuinely open to all.
It's touristy and can feel crowded, especially in peak season. The dune bashing is genuinely rough — if your back's dodgy, skip this. Pregnant women and anyone with serious heart conditions shouldn't do it. Sand gets everywhere (clothes, shoes, bag). The performances are enjoyable but not high-end production. Infants need to sit on a lap, and there are gender-separated toilet facilities which might feel dated if that's not your thing. Peak times (October–March) book out fast.
Wear loose, long clothes (sun and sand), trainers or sandals you don't care about, and bring sunscreen and a hat. Sunglasses help with glare. Bring a light layer for evening — dunes cool down.
