What to expect
You'll travel by minibus from Valencia northward to reach Peñíscola by mid-morning. Once there, wander the tight maze of the old town at your own pace—the streets slope upward towards the castle. Entry to Papa Luna's fortress gets you inside the walls; expect steep stairs and tight passages as you climb to the ramparts for views across the bay. The castle interior is modest but the vistas are genuine. Afterwards, head down to Playa Norte to swim or sunbathe on the sand. The beach stays busy in summer but the water is genuinely clear and swimmable. You'll return to Valencia in the late afternoon.
Good to know
Bring swimwear, hat and sunscreen. Food and drinks aren't included—restaurants and cafes dot the old town and beachfront, or pack a picnic. Wear proper footwear for cobbles and castle stairs.
