Kimono and Calligraphy Experience in Miyajima

About this tour

Dress in kimono and learn brush calligraphy in a serene 300-year-old Zen temple set away from Miyajima's crowds. Over one hour, you'll study the mechanics of the brush stroke, then practise writing your name transliterated into Japanese characters. The session concludes with inscribing a wooden rice scoop—a traditional good-luck charm you take home. All materials and clothing provided.

Highlights

  • Write your Japanese name on a wooden shamoji (rice scoop)
  • Learn brush technique in a quiet, centuries-old Zen temple
  • Wear full kimono during the lesson and garden photography
  • Study authentic stroke-work copying Chinese characters
  • Take home a personalised luck charm from Miyajima

What to expect

You'll arrive at the temple and change into a kimono, then move to the calligraphy studio. The instructor will explain brush control and stroke direction before showing you how to write your name in Japanese phonetics. You'll copy sample characters repeatedly until you're confident, then inscribe your name onto the rice scoop—a deliberate, meditative process. Between writing phases, explore the Japanese garden freely and photograph yourself in kimono against the temple grounds. The whole experience feels unhurried and genuinely intimate rather than rushed.

Good to know

Public transport reaches the temple easily. Children from age six onwards participate fully. No prior art experience needed. Wear clothing that's easy to remove for kimono fitting.
