About this tour
Spend an hour at Sanjo Chasuian, a newly opened tea room in Kyoto's Sanjo district, learning the foundations of matcha preparation. You'll whisk two bowls—one demonstrated by your host, the other crafted by your own hand—whilst savouring a seasonal sweet from a century-old Kyoto confectioner. The intimate space includes a traditional nijiriguchi (crawl-through entrance) designed to mark the boundary between everyday life and the ceremony itself.
Highlights
- Select your own tea bowl and whisk matcha under host guidance

- Traditional nijiriguchi entrance to step away from the world
- Join other guests in a shared group session
- Chairs available; no floor-sitting required
What to expect
Arrive at the tea room and leave your shoes at the entrance. You'll crawl through the low nijiriguchi doorway—a symbolic transition into the ceremony space. Your host will demonstrate the precise movements of whisking matcha in hot water, explaining the philosophy woven through each gesture. You'll then select a tea bowl and try the technique yourself, feeling the resistance of the whisk as it froths the powder. Between servings, you'll eat a delicate confection that changes with the season. The session moves at a contemplative pace, with time for questions and observation.
Good to know
Book in advance; sessions fill quickly. Wear socks or bring slip-ons for easy removal. The shared plan means 4–6 other guests will be present. Public transport is within walking distance; plan your own journey. Matcha bowls and whisks can be purchased if you wish to practise at home.
