About this tour
Make four beloved Japanese sweets in a traditional home near Shibuya over two hours. You'll craft strawberry daifuku, mochi ice cream, matcha pancakes and dango under Sakura's guidance—a certified confectionery instructor who covers the cultural roots of rice cake traditions. Each recipe gets written down so you can recreate them at home. These treats are naturally low-fat and gluten-free, and the intimate setting in an authentic wooden house feels like visiting a Japanese grandmother's kitchen rather than attending a class.
Highlights
- Hand-roll strawberry daifuku with mochi dough
- Churn mochi ice cream from scratch
- Bake matcha pancakes (gluten-free dorayaki)
- Shape and cook three-ball dango

What to expect
You'll spend two hours in Sakura's homely wooden house, five minutes by train south of Shibuya. The class starts with a short talk on the history and cultural significance of Japanese rice cakes. Then you move straight into making: rolling strawberry daifuku by hand, mixing and freezing mochi ice cream, preparing batter for matcha pancakes, and boiling dango until they float. Sakura circulates to offer corrections and tips. You'll sip green tea throughout. By the end, you've made enough sweets to take home and a written recipe card for each.
Good to know
The venue is Sakura's residence—a traditional Japanese house without wheelchair access. It's a short walk from Sangenjaya Station via public transport from Shibuya. Wear an apron (provided). No alcohol served. Suitable for children from age four upwards.
