About this tour

When Jake from our team ran the Roxburgh Gorge Trail, we pedalled a stunning 35km route through gold-rush history alongside the Clutha River, stopping partway for a jet boat ride back upriver. It's one of NZ's official Great Rides — a mix of Grades 1–3 track, so moderately technical but doable for anyone confident on a bike. The gorge itself is dramatic and quiet; you're sharing it with a few other riders but mostly it feels remote. The whole outfit (bike, boat transfer back to the start, shuttle return) takes roughly 6 hours, and the Qualmark Gold outfit handles all the logistics so you just ride and soak it in.

Highlights

  • Self-guided route lets you set your own pace through the gorge
  • Jet boat interlude breaks the ride and delivers a proper adrenaline hit
  • Sinch e-bikes take the grunt out of climbs without feeling like cheating
  • Clutha River views — dramatic drops and tight gorge walls throughout
  • Gear includes quality Specialized helmets and repair kits, not afterthoughts
  • Covered boat option in winter keeps you dry on the water stretch
  • Gold-rush heritage scattered along the trail adds narrative to the ride
  • No tour-bus vibe; you move as individuals, not a pack

What to expect

Jake set off early with a route briefing and a solid gravel/sealed mix underneath. The ride unfolds in two halves: first 17–18km downriver, mostly descending or flat, which feels quick and easy. Views are the star — the gorge closes in and the Clutha cuts hard against the cliffs. Around the midpoint you load onto the jet boat for the return leg upriver; it's fast, wet if you're in the front, and a nice mental break from pedalling.

The second half involves some climbing back toward the start. This is where the e-bike proves its worth — grades kick up but the motor softens the sting. Weather matters; wind funnels through the gorge and rain would make it grittier. The trail surface is a mix of sealed road, gravel, and compacted dirt, so not technical in the cliff-edge sense but you need bike handling and fitness. By hour five you're shuttled back to base. It's a proper day out, not a leisure float.

Good to know

The good

If you love riding and gorge scenery, this is a highlight — it's official, well-maintained, and the boat twist is genuinely clever. You get a quality bike, helmet with real protection, and a manager on standby. E-bike option means riders of different fitness levels can do it together. The jet boat is included, which saves money. Perfect for fit couples or mates who like a mix of physical work and adventure.

The not-so-good

It's self-guided, so you need competent bike skills and moderate-to-good fitness — not a beginner ride. The gorge wind can be relentless and unpredictable. You'll carry your own water and snacks (food's not included), which matters on a 6-hour push. Not suitable if you have spinal issues or poor cardio; the source warns clearly. Under-12s aren't recommended. In peak season (December–February) other riders share the trail. Weather can swing fast in the gorge — come prepared for cold and wet.

Practical info

Bring layers, sun cream, and a packed lunch or energy food. The e-bike hire is available; standard bikes also on offer. Group sizes are small. Peak times are late spring and summer. The jet boat transfer is included in the price, so no surprise costs there.
