About this tour
This 2–3 hour guided walk through Sorano traces layers of settlement from Etruscan times to the Renaissance. You'll start at the fourteenth-century Fortezza hotel, descend into the Vie Cave—ancient sunken pathways carved into volcanic rock—and climb to the opposite ridge for sweeping views back across the village. The route is steep and rocky in places. On return, you can pause at Cantina della Luce to sample local wines directly from the producers (optional, 20 euros).
Highlights
- Etruscan-era sunken roads, still walkable after millennia
- Fourteenth-century castle as the starting point
- Ridge-top vista across the entire settlement
- Wine tasting with family owners at their cellar
- Volcanic landscape and geological formations
What to expect
Expect a moderately challenging hike on uneven, sometimes steep terrain. The Vie Cave are narrow, shadowed passages where walls tower overhead—bring sturdy footwear and water. You'll gain real elevation on the return climb, with the reward being unobstructed views of Sorano nestled in the valley below. The walk winds through scrubland and past archaeological traces, though the landscape is lived-in rather than pristine. If you opt for wine tasting, plan 30–45 minutes extra; the owners are welcoming but unpretentious.
Good to know
Not suitable for spinal injuries or pregnancy. Moderate fitness required. Service animals welcome. Wear proper hiking boots—the Vie Cave are slippery after rain. Wine tasting costs 20 euros per person, paid on-site; book ahead if the group is large.
