About this tour
Swim along Porto Cesareo's rocky coastline whilst exploring submerged and shoreline archaeological remains spanning millennia. Over two hours, you'll encounter artefacts and ruins that reveal trade routes across the Mediterranean—marble from the Aegean, Egyptian influences, and evidence of ancient navigation. Your guide contextualises these finds within the region's geography, coastal evolution, and the environmental shifts that shaped settlement patterns. Companions can join the land-based segments at no extra cost.
Highlights
- Swim past submerged archaeological structures and scattered artefacts
- Learn about Mediterranean trade routes and cultural exchange
- Explore how geography determined where ancients built and traded
- Witness modern coastal landscape changes and ecosystem impacts
- Non-swimmers in your group join the shoreside history discussion
- Buoy and waterproof kit provided; bring phone case for underwater shots
What to expect
You'll enter the water wearing a provided swim buoy and goggles, moving between marked sites along the coast. Your guide points out visible remains and explains their context—how currents and harbours dictated trade, which cultures left their mark, and what the landscape looked like centuries ago. The route includes rocky sections where footing is tricky; water shoes help. Non-swimming companions walk the accessible shore sections and hear the same history. Bring minimal gear and leave valuables behind; the organisers won't guarantee items stay dry. You'll need solid swimming ability (200+ metres in open water) and moderate fitness.
Good to know
Water shoes strongly recommended for rocky sections. Apply sunscreen before starting. Bring only essentials; leave bulk belongings in vehicle or accommodation. Swim buoy use is mandatory. Not suitable if you have spinal injuries, poor heart health, or limited mobility in water. Underwater cameras welcome.
