About this tour
When Alex from our team ran this Heraklion wine tour, we found ourselves in a tight group of six winding through Archanes, Crete's ancient wine heartland. The day threads two wineries—one contemporary, one heritage bio-organic—with vineyard walks, tastings of local varietals paired against cheese and local fare, then finishes in the town of Archanes itself with a four-course traditional feast matched to five premium island wines. Eight hours total, picked up from your hotel on the north coast and dropped back at day's end.
Highlights
- Walked vineyard rows with the winemaker, learning how Cretan grapes handle the island's climate
- Tasted 11 wines across two houses, not tourist-standard pours—proper pairings with cheese
- Bio-organic winery's terrace: views across their own slopes while sipping their own bottles
- Four-stage Cretan dinner in Archanes town, each course matched to a wine, real local food
- Small group (max 6) meant actual conversation with winemakers, not herding
- Minivan transport meant no navigating Crete's winding hill roads ourselves
What to expect
You'll be collected from your hotel on the north coast early—the tour moves at a leisurely pace but covers ground. First stop is a newer, hands-on winery where the owner or winemaker walks you through their vineyard, explaining trellising and harvest timing specific to Archanes' terroir. Five wines follow, each with local cheese and mezze. There's time to breathe between tastings.
The second winery is older, organic-certified, and sits higher with proper views. Six more wines, again paired thoughtfully, and the setting feels less commercial. Then into Archanes town proper for the food event—a four-course traditional meal (think slow-cooked stews, grilled lamb, pastry) with five wines woven through. Pacing is relaxed; you're not rushed. The catch: it's a full day of drinking, so pace yourself.
Good to know
This isn't a mass-market bottle-shop tour. You meet actual producers and taste methodically. The food pairing finale is genuinely thought-through Cretan cooking, not tourist plate-spinning. Small groups mean you can ask real questions. Hotel pickup is included, and the minivan is air-conditioned—important in summer heat.
Eight hours of wine and food means alcohol intake is significant; plan accordingly if you're driving after (you won't be—you're picked up). The tour only operates from the north coast strip (Heraklion through Agios Nikolaos area), so southern Crete is out. Bring your voucher on the day for tax purposes. Walking through vineyards is gentle but uneven ground; not suitable if you have heart or mobility concerns. Non-alcoholic drinks aren't included, so confirm any preferences when booking. Vegetarian and dietary options exist but need advance notice.
Maximum 6 people. Peak season (May–September) books faster. Pickup is ideally at hotel reception, but traffic sometimes means a nearby meet point. Hotel drop-off is included. 3-course lunch is built in; 11 wine tastings and local food pairings cover the rest.
