About this tour
When Tom from our team ran the Vienna Woods Wine Tour, we headed south of Vienna into Lower Austria's Thermal Region—a patchwork of forested hills, vineyard-covered slopes, and villages that have been making wine for centuries. The 8-hour tour splits seasonally: summer brings a proper 9km hike through beech forests and vine terraces with sweeping views across to Hungary and Slovakia, while winter swaps the leg work for two winery visits and a chat with a local vintner about how they actually make the stuff. Either way, you're tasting proper Austrian varietals and hitting one of the country's oldest wine villages for lunch (BYO or eat nearby). No wine expertise required—it's refreshingly unpretentious.
Highlights
- 9km summer hike through forested foothills with regular breaks and proper views
- Tasting Austrian varietals most Aussies never see at bottle shops back home
- Meet a working vintner, ask questions, no gatekeeping nonsense
- Lunch in Austria's oldest wine village—character-soaked, not a tourist trap
- Winter option swaps hiking for two winery visits and warmer indoor time
- English-speaking guide who actually knows the region's history
- Vineyard slopes facing south—grapes get proper sun, views are generous
What to expect
Summer or winter, expect a relaxed pace that doesn't require you to know Grüner Veltliner from Zweigelt. Tom's experience: the hike starts easy, winds through dense beech forest with the occasional vista that stops you mid-stride, then opens onto south-facing vineyard terraces. You'll notice the landscape shifts—forested canopy drops away to reveal that Hungarian-Slovak horizon. Breaks are built in. By mid-morning you're in the old wine village, touring a winery, tasting what they've made, then handling your own lunch (bring something or grab it locally). Winter flips it: two wineries, a gentler 20-minute walk between villages on flat ground, and more time actually talking to the people making the wine. Either season, the group's small enough that questions get answered properly, not rushed through.
Good to know
If you love wine but don't speak fluent wine-snob, this works beautifully. The Thermal Region genuinely grows things you won't find everywhere. Summer hiking is achievable for most people—the pace is sociable, not a slog. Winter suits those who'd rather taste than trek. Views are proper, not postcard oversell.
Summer's 9km hike isn't for anyone with mobility issues or serious fitness gaps—the brief mentions cardiovascular health matters, and it's not flat. Winter's still got that 20-minute walk, so dress for cold. Lunch isn't included, which catches people off guard. You need at least a few others to commit or the tour won't run. Minimum age is 16. Bring cash; card acceptance isn't guaranteed at all stops. Summer requires proper footwear (trainers or hiking shoes), hat, sunscreen, water, and a camera. Winter: check the forecast and layer up.
