What to expect
You'll start with breakfast before boarding a 4×4 for the steep drive through changing landscape—from vegetation to barren volcanic terrain. At Pizzi Deneri, you'll walk sections of the rim overlooking the summit craters and the enormous blackened expanse of the Bowl of Bove. The guides will point out evidence of the 2002 eruption and explain how the mountain shaped this landscape. The descent into the lava cave is the highlight: you'll walk through a natural tunnel where hardened lava walls rise around you, giving a visceral sense of the volcano's power. The whole experience is supported by safety equipment and an authorised guide.
